Position Description: Director of Inclusive Public Transit 


IHCD is a leader in accessible and inclusively designed public transit projects. Its clients range from transit authorities to civil engineering and construction firms, from autonomous vehicle start-ups to municipalities..  IHCD’s consulting work includes a variety of public sector projects on all facets of transportation systems (e.g., subway, heavy rail, light rail, bus, multi-modal including walking) and its integration into the city’s fabric.  


Projects range From writing design guides and accessibility strategic plans, reviewing existing conditions, engaging with impacted communities, identifying desired design outcomes to conducting plan reviews on major renovation and new construction projects. We provide tailored services to explore emerging issues pertinent to accessibility and inclusive design in multi-modal systems, communication and technology, materials, emergency management and holistic customer experience.   We expect the Director to be skilled in scanning the globe for best practice and most promising precedents. The Director will be the primary leader in negotiating with clients and collaborating with a wide range of transit engineering and design firms and other deep content experts on large, multi-year projects.  The Director would also play a central role in leading IHCD’s contextual inquiry research with User/Experts in public transit.  User/Experts are people across the spectrum of age and cultural background with lived experience of a physical, sensory or brain-based functional limitation. Most projects will involve coordinating IHCD’s transit project work with other IHCD team members.   

Essential Functions

  • Lead IHCD’s transit project teams for a portfolio of existing short and long-term contracts (e.g., advise, design and implement the Accessibility and Inclusive Design strategy for the Green Line Transformation project, two commuter rail three and four station projects)
  • Through active stakeholder engagement work, develop leads and generate opportunities for additional transportation projects.
  • Create content for consulting and educational reports, based on data, research and worldwide best practices.
  • Organize and/or participate in presentations and trainings within consulting projects as well as sharing the IHCD inclusive public transit perspective at events that are virtual and/or live, and in venues in the US and globally.
  • Structure and lead contextual inquiry research projects in the built environment with IHCD’s ‘User/Experts’ and in Participatory Action Research (PAR) projects as needed.
  • Contribute in building, testing, and using GIS tools and any other cutting-edge technology tools for both quantitative and qualitative data and advanced research.
  • Coordinate closely with the IHCD Deputy Director in building and managing budgets and invoicing for transit projects.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications 

  • Enthusiasm and respect for the mission of the organization.
  • Five to eight years of pertinent experience involving public transit.
  • Master degree preferred in a relevant field.
  • Strong fiscal management skills.
  • Proven initiative, self-direction and leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proven writing and presentation skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office – Excel in particular.
  • Ability to travel locally and distance by plane or train.
  • Ability to work remotely and/or a hybrid environment.
